First get your shape that you want to burn into the body (in this case the cross). Then apply the "Inner Glow" Layer effect with the "color burn" blending option. Adjust the setting so it looks ok. Now add a layer mask and hide the shape (the inner glow effect should stay). Becarefull with the layer mask, do not use a 100% fill brush, rather use a 90-95% brush, otherwise the effect will be affected by the mask. I tried to make it look like a deep burn, by outlining the shape with black (1-2px) and setting that to color burn as well. But duplicating and applying a inner shadow to the layer works as well sometimes. Just gotta experiment with it.
